Intel to combat smartphone, tablet market with Tri-Gate technology
Intel's recently announced 22nm Tri-Gate transistor technology could give it the ammunition it needs to tackle the booming tablet and smartphone semiconductor industry, according to a new IHS iSuppli report. The market research company believes it could also allow the chip giant to fight off a potential incursion into the pc business from rival ARM devices.
Utilising 22nm process technology, Intel claims its X86 microprocessors will consume less than half the power of devices using 32nm technology and conventional planar transistors, while still delivering the same level of performance.
"The performance gains and power savings of the 3d Tri-Gate transistors are like nothing we've seen before," stated Mark Bohr, Intel Senior Fellow. "It will give product designers the flexibility to make current devices smarter and wholly new ones possible. We believe this breakthrough will extend Intel's lead even further over the rest of the semiconductor industry."
"A 50% reduction in power consumption is significant," commented Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms research at IHS. "The less power your electronic device consumes, the longer the battery will last and the longer a user can be truly mobile. Marching down the nanometre curve will definitely help Intel to penetrate the market for mobile devices."
