Freescale joins forces with Liquavista for next gen eReader devices
Liquavista has announced a collaboration with Freescale Semiconductor to develop platforms for next generation eReader devices.
The devices utilise Freescale's i.MX51 processor for eReader applications which are designed to allow developers to trial Liquavista electrowetting displays with real applications.
Freescale's SoC is said to provide the necessary file decoding capabilities to match the graphics and video functionality of Liquavista's displays, which create images that use minimal battery power, support colour and high speed video.
The i.MX515 processor has multiple processing units including an ARM Cortex-A8 core, a vector floating point unit and an image processing unit.
"Working with Freescale will enable our customers to evaluate the benefits of both Liquavista's displays and Freescale's processors," said Guy Demuynck, Liquavista's ceo. "Our development team has already delivered our first SDKs to the market for customers to start developing their own applications on a joint Liquavista-Freescale platform."
Demuynck believes the commercialisation of the technology will enable developers to offer enhanced mobile products and applications which deliver to consumers a mobile lifestyle.
He concluded: "This drives our key objective to have the first consumer electronics devices incorporating an electrowetting display on the market by mid 2011 and heralds the next generation of eReader devices."
The Liquavista-Freescale System Development Kits are available for both LiquavistaBright and LiquavistaColor product platforms and are based on Freescale's i.MX51 platform.
