First silicon surge protectors to meet international standard says ST

  • Surge protectors

STMicroelectronics has announced a range of devices which it claims to be the first silicon surge protectors to meet international surge protection standard IEC61000-4-5.

The STIEC45 Transil range has been designed to provide mandatory protection for power supplies against surges, electrostatic discharge, and electrical fast transients. Metal oxide varistors are traditionally connected to prevent surge energy reaching the power supply, but according to ST, silicon surge protectors are more reliable, maintaining over 75% of their protection capability up to 150°C, and are soldered to standard sized metal pads on the pc board.

This approach, says ST, delivers a space efficient solution for equipment operating in high temperature environments, such as factories or vehicles.
The devices have also passed MIL-STD-883 esd tests and feature 500A (8/20µs) peak pulse current capability and 410A (8/20µs) current capability at 150°C.

Five STIEC45 variants are available, covering stand off voltages from 24 to 33V.
