Display rise and fall

Older display technologies prove a liability.

Technologies like lcds and tfts are spelling disaster for traditional display manufacturers. LG.Philips Displays has said that it will close its Newport and Southport facilities, losing more than 940 jobs. A sharp decline in the market for crts because of competing technologies, combined with a downward pressure on prices, has prompted the company to move manufacturing to China.

* Meanwhile, signalling continued interest in future display technologies, the DTI has supported Cambridge Display Technologies' involvement in a Europe wide R&D collaboration called 'Pocket Multimedia', aimed at developing low power technologies for portable devices. The project also involves STMicroelectronics,
Thompson Multimedia, Philips, URMET and CMM/Armines.

CDT has just entered a two year joint r&d programme with Thomson. The collaboration is aimed at blending CDT's lep materials expertise and knowledge of inkjet printing technology with Thomson's experience in display conception and testing.
