Deal strengthens Toshiba's position in security market
Toshiba has signed an agreement which allows it to use security specialist Cryptography Research's patents. Toshiba says that the deal will strengthen its position in the security market and enhance its development of secure products against differential power analysis (dpa) and related attacks.
DPA is a form of attack that involves monitoring the fluctuating electrical power consumption of a target device and then using advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys and other information. Countermeasures to dpa can help protect tamper-resistant products used in applications such as banking, pay television, mass transit, secure ID, and wireless telecommunications.
The license agreement also covers software executing on licensed Toshiba products, allowing the company's customers to develop their own security countermeasures without a separate license from Cryptography Research.
