Deal creates Canadian connectivity hub

  • Deal creates Canadian connectivity hub

In a $CAN86million ($70m) deal, Canadian connectivity specialist Gennum has bought Tundra Semiconductor. The transaction will add high speed signal integrity expertise to the Gennum portfolio.

According to Gennum, the acquisition will allow it to achieve its strategic and financial objectives more quickly and to accelerate the development of a range of high speed interconnect and signal integrity products. Dr Franz Fink, Gennum's president and ceo, pictured, said: "We believe Tundra's strong position with leading communications systems OEMs … will increase Gennum's ability to provide more, high value products to a broader set of markets and will result in increased opportunities for the combined company to grow its business."
Tundra – which can trace its heritage back to Canada's Mitel era – has focused of late on bridges and switches for such standards as RapidIO, PCI Express and SPI4.2. It also has a design services division, Silicon Logic Engineering, that undertakes asic and fpga design services, as well as developing semiconductor IP.
Gennum, meanwhile, is focused on developing connectivity solutions and IP cores for consumer, video broadcast and data communications applications.
