Collaboration will ‘define standard’ for mobile technology platform claims ARM
ARM and GlobalFoundries have joined forces on a next generation SoC platform technology which they claim will result in a 40% increase in computing performance and 30% improvement in power efficiency, compared to existing versions.
According to ARM, the new chip manufacturing platform will also enable a 100% increase in standby battery life.
The SoC platform is based on the ARM Cortex A9 processor optimised ARM physical IP and GlobalFoundries' 28nm Gate First High K Metal Gate (HFMG) process. This is said to provide 'significant' performance gains over the previous generation of 40/45nm technologies.
The two companies claim that the collaboration will enable manufacturers of embedded devices such as smartphones, and tablets to address increasing design and manufacturing complexities while reducing time to volume production at mature yields.
ARM president, Tudor Brown (pictured) noted that the transition to 28nm technology node will be an important inflection point for wireless technology. Brown said: "Our collaboration with GlobalFoundries will enable customers to rapidly bring high performance, low power ARM technology based designs to market on a 28nm HKMG technology that is ready for high volume implementation. The combination of GlobalFoundries technology, our leading physical ip solutions, and the full internet capabilities delivered by ARM processors results in a powerful integration of processing, graphics and power efficiency."
