Adelante's first dsp technology

Adelante – the result of a merger between Philips’ dsp division and Frontier Design – has unveiled its first dsp technology.
The Galixic range includes dsp cores, dsp subsystems and development tools. The first core to be made available is Saturn, a 16bit reconfigurable core aimed at wireless handsets and digital servo applications.
The core can execute 420MACs, consuming 0.25mW/MHz. With a die size of 0.5mm2, the core is said to have the lowest power consumption and smallest silicon area per unit of performance than comparable cores.
Saturn’s performance can be enhanced using 96bit vliw instructions, the core’s internal hardware can be expanded with application specific execution units and coprocessors can be added.
