A sense of deflation

Micros used in tyre pressure monitoring.

A tyre pressure sensor employing microcontrollers and rf communication has been introduced by Motorola's Semiconductor Products division. The MPXY8020A sensor will be used on remote sensing modules attached to the tyre inflation valve at each wheel. The sensors transmit pressure and temperature information to a receiver module in the dashboard, which then notifies the driver when tyre pressure is not at the optimal pressure level.

This device, a key step in Motorola's tyre pressure monitoring system, addresses a market which has been forecast by Strategy Analytics to be grow to 29.3million units by 2008, or $6billion by 2010. Legislation passed by the US Congress in 2000 will require all automotive manufacturers to install tyre pressure monitoring systems by October 2006.
