iPad or IPAD?

If not quite raining on the parade, STMicroelectronics is certainly presenting some clouds. As the world's media sings the praises of the iPad, it appears that the Apple tree may well be given a little shake.

Back in September 2000, STMicroelectronics registered a patent on its Integrated Passive and Active Devices brand - Or 'IPAD' - a brand not due to expire until September 2010.

ST's sober description of the IPAD goes like this: ST now offers a complete IPAD product range for mobile phone, laptop computer, personal digital and consumer applications.

Whether the potential clash of identities comes to anything remains to be seen. But you can almost hear the sound of pencils being sharpened.
