Bullish optoelectronic market burgeoning

  • optoelectronics

New Electronics archive: June 23 1970

When New Electronics reported the growth of the optoelectronic market in June 1970, the primary drivers were detectors and emitters.

Today the global optoelectronic components market is valued at around $600billion* and is expected to enjoy continued growth over the coming years.

This growth is due to an ever expanding range of applications, from consumer and medical to automotive and mobile appliances. Stringent safety rulings in the design of modern vehicles mean that the automotive sector will increasingly turn to optoelectronics for solutions.

Today, Monsanto (MEMC) continues to design and develop wafer technologies as well as focusing on solar grade polysilicon, which goes into making photovoltaic solar cells. According to MEMC, solar wafers are one of the company's fastest growing products.
