Xilinx links with Irish telecom research centre 11/04/2007
 
Xilinx has linked with Ireland’s Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain Research (CTVR) to support pioneering research into advanced new telecommunications and networking systems.
The initiative is looking to make a breakthrough in the field of adaptive radio technology – one of CTVR’s main areas of interest. The research is looking to enable a mobile phone to alter its radio frequency system ‘intelligently’ to work on any country’s cellular phone network. This, it claims, would be a major boost to the global telecommunications industry and phone users where several cellular standards currently operate across the world.
The project is based at Trinity College Dublin, one of a consortium of eight research institutions forming the CTVR, which is supported by Science Foundation Ireland and IDA Ireland. Trinity is developing the software and Xilinx will implement that software in programmable logic devices.
“We are delighted to welcome an acknowledged industry leader such as Xilinx on board,” said CTVR director Professor Donal O’Mahony. “That Xilinx has shown such faith in us is testament to the quality of talent available in Irish third level research institutions and a vindication of the mission of CTVR to be a centre for the development of commercially significant products derived from world class advanced research.”
