Discera unveils MEMS oscillator range 27/02/2007

MEMS, oscillator MEMS based oscillator developer Discera is releasing four product series aimed at high volume consumer electronics applications. According to marketing director Venkat Bahl, pictured, the company is ‘going after’ subsets of the market and claimed the four families would cover the ‘entire spectrum of consumer applications’.
According to Bahl, the MOS1 product range meets some of the prime needs of consumer products. “Power consumption is of prime importance for portable designs, as is size. If you can hit these metrics from the OEM’s perspective, you’re ‘in the money’.” Power consumption is 6mA, with less than 1µA in standby.
Discera’s oscillators comprise a MEMS resonator and a clock asic. An emf is applied to the resonator, which vibrates and provides the frequency source. This is then processed to get the end frequency by the asic.
The two die approach is fully cmos, which Bahl says is important because it lends itself to scalability. “There’s a lot of infrastructure in fabs,” he continued, “and we’re tapping into that.”
MOS1 devices are available in four frequency ranges – 1 to 10MHz; 10 to 40MHz; 40 to 80MHz; and 80 to 125MHz – and in a choice of plastic or ceramic packages measuring 3.2 x 5 x 1mm. Size is important, said Bahl. “The smaller you are, the better.” And he added that MOS1 parts are footprint compatible with competing parts, so can be ‘dropped in’.
* Vectron will sell MOS1 parts under its brand name and part numbers. According to Bahl, the move gives MEMS resonators ‘credibility’.
