HDTV generated from standard definition source 11/01/2007

high definition tv, programmable logic, fpga French algorithm specialist Let It Wave has demonstrated a prototype version of what it believes is a breakthrough in HDTV up conversion at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Building on its super resolution bandlet algorithm developed initially for broadcast equipment manufacturers, Let It Wave says it is bringing ‘unprecedented picture quality’ to flat display applications by creating creates HD images from SD video sources.
“Spatiotemporal geometric bandlet representations provide a totally new approach that yields outstanding video images” explains Professor Stéphane Mallat, Let It Wave’s ceo.
The full space-time processing technology restores details hidden in the original SD material and produces no “flicker” and no “jaggy” artifacts, a typical issue resulting from today’s most advanced technologies like motion adaptive and even motion compensative. It also avoids introducing blurring and shadow artifacts produced by competitive frame rate converters.
Let It Wave’s prototype is based on an Altera FPGA. “Let It Wave’s up converter, combined with breakthrough frame rate conversion, demonstrates how Altera programmable logic enables new technologies at consumer price points,” said Tim Colleran, Altera vice president of the consumer, automotive and broadcast business group.
