Desktop performance for mobile ’phones

STMicroelectronics has licensed the ARM Cortex-A8 processor for use in hand held devices. According to the company, it intends to deploy the processor across its mobile technology portfolio, making desktop levels of performance available in a range of mobile phones and portable multimedia devices. ST says that, by combining the performance and power benefits of the Cortex-A8 processor with that of its Nomadik multimedia applications processor, it can deliver advanced performance and functionality to end users.
“The next generation of personal multimedia electronics devices must incorporate advanced functionality, with the processing power needed to drive the rich content demanded by the end user, such as mobile games, video on demand, 3G map services and multi megapixel cameras,” said Jyrki Hannikainen, general manager of ST’s application processor division. “By combining the Cortex-A8 processor with the distributed processing of the Nomadik multimedia platform, ST will keep delivering high performance and low power solutions to the market.”
“(The) agreement with STMicroelectronics will deliver innovative technologies to market which incorporate high performance and power efficiency in next generation multimedia electronics devices,” said Mike Inglis, ARM’s executive vice president for marketing and business development.
