An ageing population and spiralling cost of healthcare and associated services have become a severe problem for most Western societies. A recent report from Frost & Sullivan suggests that 50% of hospital beds in Europe are occupied by patients suffering from chronic diseases who require continuous monitoring. This corresponds to around 70% of total healthcare cost in Europe, a tremendous amount of money.
At the same time, hospital personnel and healthcare professionals are expected to improve patient care and monitoring on an ever increasing number of patients, while budgets continue to decline. It has been recognised that the only escape from this vicious circle is an increased amount of remote patient monitoring and patient self testing techniques, allowing doctors and healthcare professionals to spend more time treating acute cases, instead of monitoring and managing chronic patients.
Electronics is set to play a key role in improving patient care, whilst cutting costs, since most remote or self monitoring techniques feature partially automated test equipment. This allows the patient to see immediate readings, as well as supporting storage and transmission of measurement results.
