Infotainment enablers – SPONSORED TUTORIAL 28/02/2006

From navigation systems to music and parking cameras to traffic information – not to mention conventional data – the instrument clusters and centre consoles in modern vehicles offer drivers more information and more functionality than ever before. And, as vehicle manufacturers look for ways to reduce component count, simplify design, speed implementation and drive down the cost of console and cluster applications, so semiconductor manufacturers are creating system on chip (SoC) solutions that address new and emerging ‘infotainment’ requirements.
Two distinctly different embedded solutions from Toshiba provide an insight into the ‘state of the art’ for these applications.
LCDs for satellite navigation, climate control, tv and other ‘infotainment’ systems are becoming increasingly common, whilst colour graphical displays are appearing in ‘hybrid’ instrument clusters.
This trend is set to continue, with instrument clusters moving from monochrome or passive displays to colour display solutions, whilst next generation designs will include fully digital TFT or OLEDs. Such solid state colour instrument clusters offer significantly enhanced flexibility; whilst a fully digital display presents the opportunity to customise the ‘look and feel’ of the instrument cluster – based on user preferences – for the display of specific content. Graphical displays are also critical to emerging head up display systems.
