Targeting triple play

If there’s one term which is dominating the communications market at the moment, then it’s probably ‘triple play’. And it means providing voice, video and data communications over a single IP connection – in other words, a digital convergence.
Triple play services bring with them the need for high performance devices for communications infrastructure applications. These applications, in general, require high performance and high power, along with flexibility. But another important constraint imposed by the consumer electronics market is cost.
In Xilinx’ opinion, more ‘traditional’ solutions can’t keep pace with these demands. It claims dsps can’t keep up with increasing algorithmic complexity, processors are hitting a performance wall and asics and assps can’t keep up with evolving communications standards. The solution, at least in its view, is the fpga. And its latest offering – Virtex 5 – is aimed squarely at the emerging triple play market.
