Will super WiFi fly? 08/05/2006

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access – WiMax – has its roots in last mile broadband wireless access, a technology designed to compete with DSL and cable modems.
Although new to many, WiMax has a strong history – evolving from proprietary broadband fixed wireless access systems, through standardised systems to now being capable of supporting full mobile broadband services.
Meanwhile, the mobile cellular phone industry is also evolving to offer broadband. Cellular has always offered excellent mobility but, until recently, had limited high speed data capabilities.
Soon, WiMax and cellular technologies will come together and both will deliver mobile broadband. In fact, cellular’s long term evolution looks more like WiMax than its own roots.
Many now enjoy high speed internet connectivity at home. We pay for high speed access and choose which services we use and how and when we use them. Mobile broadband promises the same capability, but while out and about. It enables very local access at locations where users choose to stop. WiMax, meanwhile, promises to provide access between hotspots – hence some are calling it ‘super WiFi’.
