The Olympic movement is driven by its fundamental objective of ‘citius, altius, fortius’, which means faster, higher, stronger. It’s not too much of a stretch of the imagination to create a similar slogan for the electronics industry: faster, smaller, cheaper. One of the sectors of the electronics industry where these three terms are being applied with a vengeance is the data converter market.
And you can understand why. Faster, obviously, because sampling rates are being pushed ever higher. Smaller, because that’s what’s driving the industry. And cheaper speaks for itself. You can add in a few other terms when it comes to data conversion, but resolution is one of the most important. So the trend in data conversion is for devices with higher resolution and higher sampling rates.
But, in the contrary manner of the electronics industry, one size most assuredly doesn’t fit all. There are applications where resolution is more important than speed and vice versa. A brief look around the catalogues of the major data conversion companies reinforces that opinion; in fact, you could be forgiven for believing that there’s a data converter for every possible application.
