Putting hsdpa to the test 24/03/2006

Whilst 3GPP standard conformance tests for high speed downlink packet access (hsdpa) are more or less complete, the design verification challenge hasn’t stopped evolving. As with all new wireless protocols, designers face the paradox of what to develop first – a handset is needed to test the network and vice versa – so a learning process inevitably ensues. But unless designers keep abreast of the latest test developments, hsdpa offers huge potential for disappointment.
HSDPA enables data rates of up to 14Mbit/s, allowing more sophisticated mobile multimedia services, such as internet browsing, video streaming and tv. An evolution of wcdma, hsdpa operates differently to other wireless protocols and design engineers who approach it in the same way as wcdma, do so at their peril.
