Video in the frame 08/12/2005

Video is becoming a ‘hot’ technology. Whether it’s the addition of a camera to a mobile phone or the creation of a ‘next generation’ mobile video terminal, increasing numbers of developers appear to be turning their attention to satisfying the growing consumer interest in the technology.
But satisfying that interest is posing some technical problems for developers. Video is a complex technology, with extended lead times; in essence, you have to know what you’re doing. And even if you do, it’s not an easy process.
Texas Instruments is looking to make the video product development process a lot easier with its DaVinci technology. The company lifted a couple of veils from DaVinci in September this year, giving some broad ideas of what the technology might achieve. Now, another veil has been lifted with the introduction of the first products – the TMS320DM6443 and 6446.
Jean-Marc Charpentier, dsp business development manager, EMEA, for TI, said: “DaVinci is a programmable platform that enables developers to get to market more quickly. DaVinci also allows us to address the video market as a whole; from video security to set top boxes to digital still cameras.”
