Today’s communications systems depend heavily on digital signal processing to implement complex modulation schemes. A/D converters – the critical link between the rf chain and the digital processor – have a major influence on system performance.
Choosing the right a/d converter is not simply a matter of choosing the number of bits and the sample rate. Today’s converters are complicated systems with many specifications and performance characteristics. This article considers some important parameters, illustrating the points using Linear Technology’s LTC2208 130Msample/s 16bit a/d converter.
