Developing a system on chip (SoC) is a double edged sword; on one side you have the benefit of extremely optimised hardware and the low unit cost that comes with a custom device, but on the other you have the disadvantage of not being able to start developing with it until the first samples are fabricated.
The tried and tested solution is a development board that offers the hardware functionality of the end solution, if not the performance. Of course, fpgas have been used for prototyping asics for a long time and it’s a role for which they are uniquely cut out. Now, NEC has gone one step further with its SoC Lite+ starter kit, which offers half of the finished SoC tightly coupled with an fpga.
