Bug busting 04/08/2005

Enterprise networks – whatever the company size – are complicated affairs. And the degree of complexity continues to increase as staff become more mobile and the amount of home working grows.
As the degree of complexity grows, so too does the network’s vulnerability. With data now the lifeblood of any company, it has become crucial to protect that information.
In the days when pcs stood alone, there was only one way to link between machines – good old fashioned ‘sneakernet’, where information was exchanged by means of floppy disks carried between desks. Today, companies can use a range of networks – both wired and wireless – not only to link desks within one building, but also to link remote offices and even remote workers. The opportunity for unauthorised or malevolent access has grown enormously.
If you look at the problem from the perspective of the home computer, then there is a relatively simple solution; the combination of antivirus software, a robust firewall and some software that targets the various kinds of ‘malware’ that can be downloaded. Together, these should keep the home pc safe.
