Just as the term ‘cell phone’ has entered the English language without fear or prejudice, expect the same to happen for the phrase ‘triple play’ within the next three years. Intelligibly, it means the delivery of three digital services over a single connection: voice, data and video. Sandeep Harpalani, senior marketing manager, network media platforms within Analog Devices, said: “The triple play market is still in its infancy, but there is a lot of interest from service providers. Those in Europe, Japan, Korea and China are taking the lead here in terms of streaming digital video solutions.”
The expected uptake is based on sound market research. “From some independent surveys and from our own market research, more than 80% of the respondent broadband users showed an interest in using triple play services,” said Erwin Ysewijn, vice president of marketing for Infineon Technologies’ Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Business Unit, adding: “Key to this market is the increase in broadband speeds, through technologies such as ADSL2+, VDSL/2 and FTTx, for which Infineon has solutions in both the customer premise equipment (set top box) and the central office.”
Such is the anticipated demand, silicon vendors such as Infineon and Analog Devices are busy developing whole families of solutions. As with most new applications, it’s still too early to say there is an agreed definition of what constitutes triple play, so flexibility is vital. But suffice it to say, quality of service will be crucial: “When a user can receive all three triple play components of voice, video and data at a satisfactory quality, then triple play services have been achieved,” said Ysewijn.
