Linking ARMs 20/05/2005

It is no secret that the ARM7 is one of the most widely used 32bit microprocessors and that ARM7 based chips continue to gain an increasing share of the embedded market. Neither is it a secret that the use of fpgas is spreading to higher volume applications and Actel’s recently launched ProASIC3 family is targeted at these value based markets. It should be no surprise, therefore, to discover that Actel and ARM are working together to bring the ARM7 core within the reach of fpga users.
The move makes sense because using the ARM7 in ProASIC3 devices combines the inherent flexibility of fpgas with the ARM7’s industry standard architecture. Both companies are now cooperating to optimise the performance and the silicon area of the ARM7TDMI-S for use in the ProASIC3 range.
Synergy between the ARM7 and flash based fpgas translates into a powerful and flexible platform for rapid SoC design and implementation. The ProASIC3 family has a range of security features that protect the ARM7 core, but still give users full access to the core’s I/O, so they can maximise its effectiveness in their designs.
