Embedded risc processors have been a favourite technology for mobile ’phone developers, offering an attractive combination of cost, performance and size to a demanding industry. The success of ARM in this area is just one example of how well the technology has been accepted.
Yet some companies believe that risc processing is only an evolutionary technology. They believe the next generations of mobile ’phones will need revolutionary technology and are working to satisfy that perceived need.
One of those companies is Patriot Scientific, which has been developing the IGNITE range of 32bit embedded microprocessors. And it looks as if the company’s technology has the potential to set the mobile ’phone business on fire.
EEMBC – the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium – announced just before Christmas that the IGNITE 2FX processor achieved an ‘out of the box’ score of 0.01808 Consumermarks per MHz. According to the organisation, this is the highest certified ‘out of the box’ score on a per gate basis for any general purpose processor to date.
