Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, Lord Mandelson has stated that science and engineering in the UK is 'at the heart of a strong and thriving Britain'. He made the comments at the National Science and Engineering Competition at The Big Bang Fair in Manchester.
The winner of the UK Young Engineer of the Year was Shawn Brown for a solar bike built with as much sustainable and reusable material as possible. Thomas Hearing won UK Young Scientist of the Year for the development of a geographical information system.
Lord Mandelson presented the two winners with certificates, a cash prize of £2,000; a choice of a visit to Earthwatch or NASA and an additional trip to CERN to see the Large Hadron Collider or the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma.
Lord Mandelson said: "The winners of the National Science & Engineering Competition are living, breathing proof that science and engineering in the UK is at the heart of a strong and thriving Britain over the coming decades. Our young scientists and engineers, guided by schemes like the National Science & Engineering Competition will help ensure that our businesses remain competitive, that we have a buoyant job market and that the economy of the UK can thrive amidst increasing global competition."

Secondly I have to laugh at the first paragraph on the comments of Lord Mandelson. This just shows that our goverment is completely out of touch with what is happening in our country.
Over the last two decaded our goverments have helped destroy our large scale manufacturing industry due to external pressures/buy outs. Now design and R&D jobs are being moved from UK to India and China. hundreds of people in UK engineering are loosing their jobs due to this move to the east.
I find it so hard to find a job and I have approx 15 years experience. I feel sorry for the the students who are promuised the earth but I hope they can all get jobs in the future.
When will our MP's/prime minster Gordon Brown realise that without manufacturing we cannot survive. We can't all work in the service industry.
Regards
