Texas Instruments has broadened its range of power management devices with a step down synchronous switcher said to be 60% smaller than current multichip converters.
The TPS54620 is described as a 'complete' 6A power solution, supporting input voltages ranging from 4.5 to 17V. Applications will include space constrained designs such as wireless basestations or high density servers.
Francois Malleus, TI's analogue business director, high performance analogue, EMEA, said: "The device allows a power solution with a footprint of 195mm² to be created. The maximum height is 3mm, which is limited by the choice of inductor."
The TPS54620 is a monolithic device. Malleus noted: "To get this level of voltage and power generally requires multiple die." The part is made on TI's LBC7 process, introduced last year. The 0.25µm process supports low on resistance, higher current carrying and low leakage. TI has already made members of the TPS61 and 62 families on this process.
In addition to size reduction, the TPS54620 features a 0.8V reference with ±1% accuracy over temperature and offers a power conversion efficiency of 95%. It also offers an Rds(on) figures 25% less than that in previous 6A devices in TI's SWIFT range. This feature allows the converter to power deep sub micron dsps, fpgas and asics. Malleus continued: "Low Rds(on) means that higher currents can be used."
With a peak current handling ability of 8A, the part integrates 26m? high side and 19m? low side mosfets and frequency can be adjusted within the range from 200kHz to 1.6MHz. and is packaged in a 3.5 x 3.5mm qfn.
