Samsung Electronics is to work with IMEC on technologies for green radios. The research collaboration topics will include cognitive reconfigurable radio baseband and millimetre wave wireless communications technologies.

Samsung IMEC to develop green radios
Samsung has been a strategic partner of IMEC for some years. In 2004, it joined IMEC as core partner in the 32nm cmos research platform. Since then, it has become involved in IMEC's multimode multimedia research program and in ubiquitous embedded systems research.
According to IMEC, by joining research programs on cognitive radio and millimetre wave communications, researchers from Samsung will closely collaborate with IMEC's research team to develop a fundamental understanding of the technology and develop robust solutions for future wireless terminals.
"We are excited that Samsung is extending its collaboration with us towards cognitive radios and millimetre wave communications," said IMEC ceo Gilbert Declerck. "We have been collaborating very successfully for five years and have learned from each other in many ways. This extension proves that our wireless communications research gives valuable know how to the industry to develop their mobile terminals of the future."
IMEC is developing ics that allow wireless communication of massive data streams, including uncompressed high definition television. Because these streams are in the order of Gbit/s, IMEC is working on cmos chips that support transmission at 60GHz.
