Core competence
09/02/2009 Email to a friend

Even in these troubled economic times, productivity is still the name of the game.

Core competenceGetting your product to market remains a major imperative and the introduction of more complex technology doesn’t make the task any easier.
The embedded systems market is no more immune to these pressures than any other sector. In fact, the broad range of technologies and their speed of introduction can often work against the designer.
Nevertheless, new technologies continue to appear and the 32bit microcontroller sector is just one that has seen a couple of recent moves. Freescale has unveiled the MCF5225x range. This extension of the company’s portfolio is based on the ColdFire V2 core and comes with a maximum of 512k of flash memory – the largest amount of flash the company has yet offered. “It’s an mcu, rather than an mpu,” Jim Stuart, industrial marketing manager EMEA, highlighted. “It has the range of peripherals you’d expect to find on a microcontroller.”
Meanwhile, Toshiba has added another member to its low power ARM based microprocessor range. The device, which boasts an extended temperature range, is targeted at man-machine interfaces and other industrial applications where multimedia functionality is important.
