SystemC: Now open for embedded software.
In the past, embedded software developers had little reason to pay attention to the results and deliverables of the Open SystemC Initiative (OSCI), an organisation created by leading systems, semiconductor, IP, embedded software and eda companies in 1999.
While the organisation has always looked to support embedded software development, SystemC has not possessed the necessary technology components to do so until recently. Everything changed with the ratification of the SystemC TLM 2.0 standard in June 2008. SystemC has since become the key enabler for the design of virtual platforms, allowing embedded software development to occur in parallel with hardware design, many months before silicon is available.
The TLM 2.0 specification now includes transaction abstractions, which allow virtual platform components to communicate and be interoperable. The lack of these abstractions had previously been an inhibitor for virtual platform based software design to achieve mainstream adoption.
