Characterising and validating rf signals can often throw the metaphorical spanner into the works for design engineers. With communications and radar systems demanding more information bandwidth, the need for accurate phase and magnitude characterisation of wideband signals also increases. So how can designers evaluate complex signals at high rates without the need for an external down converter?
Tektronix has introduced a resolution in the shape of SignalVu, vector signal analysis software that works with the oscilloscope user interface to provide real time bandwidth and triggers from the oscilloscope and a user interface for rf measurements.
The software runs on Tektronix’ DPO7000 or DPO/DSA70000 hardware, providing engineers with the integration of spectrum analyser and digital oscilloscope functionality. Signals can be directly observed up to 20GHz without the use of an external down converter presenting engineers with spectral information and pulse parameters prior to beginning the data collection process.
As communications systems are driven by demands for greater data rates, which drives bandwidth, wideband signals have real time or information bandwidth greater than 500MHz and can’t be demodulated from traditional spectrum analysers. Typical bandwidths for wideband signals range from 500MHz to 4GHz and carrier frequencies can extend into the microwave region. Tektronix oscilloscopes deliver real time acquisition signals up to 20GHz and the SignalVu signal analysis software shows time variant behaviour of these signals, speeding design validation for applications such as wideband radar, high data rate satellite links or frequency hopping communications.
