With worldwide network operators offering ubiquitous broadband 3G services, leading device manufacturers are turning to their engineering teams to enable their products with 3G wireless wide area networking (wwan) capability.
In 2007, roughly 1.7million laptop computers shipped with 3G capability and this number could increase to 2.6m units in 2008 (Source: ABI Research, Mobile Broadband to the Laptop, 2008). 3G has also been integrated into vertical market products – such as routers, portable fleet service terminals, vehicular mount Mobile Route Management (MRM) systems, vending machines, point of sale kiosks and vehicular based video systems – all in an effort to see a return on investment by way of reduced operating costs, improved efficiencies and seamless two way communication. In terms of the quantity of 3G enabled devices shipped, these vertical markets are expected to rival the laptop market by 2009.
