MEMS demand to grow rapidly 05/09/2008

MEMS devices Demand from consumer electronics and wireless applications is set to expand the global market for MEMS devices to $8.8billion in 2012, 40% larger than the market in 2006.
By 2012, four main segments – consumer electronics, mobile handsets, automotive and industrial process control – will account for more than 60% of all MEMS revenues. Alongside these areas, demand from the automotive sector will grow as mandates for safety and new emissions standards develop.
“The markets for mainstay MEMS actuator products – like inkjet heads and TI’s DLP chips –have finally passed the baton to MEMS sensors,” said Jérémie Bouchaud, director and principal analyst, MEMS, for iSuppli.
“The consumer electronics and mobile communications fields are more dynamic than the previous mainstay markets for MEMS,” he continued. “Existing companies have a great opportunity to ride this wave and new players have a chance to address a relatively open market. However, deep R&D pockets are essential to compete in this area, and the companies that will succeed will be those that bet on and invest in building dedicated mass production facilities.”
