HAT hits heat 20/06/2008

advanced envelope tracking , cellular base stations, rf power amplifier (PA) modules, broadcast digital switchover, broadband handsets The combination of the 3G roll out, the impending broadcast digital switchover and growth in broadband handsets will create a ‘perfect storm’ of opportunity for Cambridge based Nujira and its high accuracy tracking (HAT) technology.
Aimed at rf power amplifier (PA) modules, HAT delivers solutions that double the typical efficiency of wide band PA modules for next generation cellular network base stations, DVB digital broadcast transmitters and 4G cellular handsets.
Whilst modern radio and broadcast technologies, such as WCDMA, WiMAX and DVB, provide consumers with high bandwidth ‘on the move’ mobile connectivity, it comes at a price. Network operators are increasingly concerned with high network power consumption due to the poor efficiency of the linear RF PAs required to meet complex modulation performance.
In traditional (Class AB) PAs, the main output amplifier stage is operated at a constant supply voltage. When amplifying real life WCDMA signals, such PAs have an efficiency of around 15% – 85% of the power provided to the PA being dissipated as heat.
HAT overcomes this problem by modulating the voltage supplied to the PA in line with the modulation envelope to ensure the output device remains in its most efficient operating region.
