QorIQ takes embedded multicore to ‘new levels’ 17/06/2008

multicore processor, communications platforms, networking, embedded systems Freescale has unveiled a range of communications platforms which it says have been designed to enable the next era of networking and to take embedded multicore to new levels of adoption.
Called QorIQ, the platforms are an evolution of Freescale’s PowerQUICC processor line and are designed to help developers migrate to multicore with confidence.
“QorIQ is more than a product portfolio – it's an intelligent and comprehensive approach established to help the embedded community move to multicore with confidence,” said Lynelle McKay, pictured, general manager of Freescale’s Networking and Multimedia Division. “Multicore is an exceptionally complex technology, especially within the strict power, cost and performance requirements of the embedded space. With QorIQ, the embedded industry now has second generation embedded multicore – and a coherent multicore migration solution.”
QorIQ platforms include single, dual and many core processors – all based on Freescale's e500 Power Architecture technology. The platforms start with the P1 and P2 levels, which consist of five devices – all package, pin and software compatible. The P3 and P4 platforms enable developers to move into the ‘many core' arena and address more advanced processing needs. The P5 platform will deliver Freescale’s highest performing solutions well within embedded power budgets.
QorIQ devices will be manufactured on a 45nm process, with a roadmap to 32nm and beyond. Power consumption will range from 4W to to less than 30W for ‘many core’ devices. The QorIQ P3 and P4 platforms, meanwhile, will allow developers to manage device frequency and voltage.
