ColdFire core for Cyclone fpgas 09/06/2008

Looking to meet demand for custom semiconductor solutions, Freescale has developed an fpga implementation of its 32bit V1 ColdFire core and is making it available for use in Altera’s Cyclone III family. IP specialist IPextreme will license the core to Cyclone III customers free of charge through its online marketplace.
“The marriage of the V1 core and fpgas gives embedded developers the best of both worlds – being able to add product differentiation without giving up a familiar, proven processor core and the ecosystem that supports that processor core,” said Aiden Mitchell, consumer and industrial product management director for Freescale’s Microcontroller Solutions Group.
The V1 ColdFire core from IPextreme comes with a number of Altera specific features, including: area and speed optimised to achieve run at more than 100MHz; a single pin background debug mode interface; and support for Altera’s SOPC Builder, allowing connection to a range of peripherals in Altera’s Quartus II design environment.
“We see significant pent up demand from the market for the ColdFire architecture,” said Warren Savage, president and ceo of IPextreme. “The availability of a special version of the V1 ColdFire for fpga customers provides a continuum of implementation options for customers adopting the ColdFire architecture.”
