Logical move

The programmable logic business is one of the more aggressive within the electronics sector. Apart from fierce competition between the main participants, the sector is focused on the leading edge of manufacturing technology. An example is Altera’s recent announcement of Stratix IV on TSMC’s 40nm cmos process.
So when a ‘new kid on the block’ appears and says it has technology which improves significantly upon current offerings, there is likely to be interest. And when that company says its technology is based on a 1986 patent from one of its potential rivals, interest is piqued further.
The ‘new kid on the block’ is SiliconBlue, which has announced what it believes to be ‘revolutionary’ single chip, low power fpgas that set new standards for price, power and size, whilst providing ‘asic like’ logic capacity.
Targeted at battery powered handheld consumer applications, the devices are set for manufacture on TSMC’s 65nm low power cmos process.
