One of the ‘givens’ about semiconductor manufacturing is that it needs deep pockets and nerves of steel. The reason? Moore’s Law requires those companies who manufacture – or offer manufacturing services – to essentially build a new plant every 18 months or so.
Today, the leading fabbed companies are gearing themselves up for the move from 65nm to 45nm, with the prospect of 32nm looming ever closer. If that wasn’t enough, there is now the first sign of the industry moving from 300mm wafers to ones which are 450mm in diameter. It’s an expensive business: building a 45nm fab running 450mm wafers at a reasonable rate is likely to result in a bill in excess of $10billion.
