Wider angle, wider choice 23/05/2008
 
tft lcd panels, viewing angles, in plane switching (IPS), twisted nematic, multidomain vertical alignment, E-signage, led backlights Today’s leading tft lcd panel providers are being driven to find new methods of helping system designers achieve a wide viewing angle experience, whilst maintaining exceptional colour reproduction.
This is because flat panel displays have two disadvantages compared with conventional crt. The first is that, when viewed from the side, a tft display suffers dramatic loss of screen brightness and a change of displayed colours. One viewer isn’t a problem, but invite a second – for example, two doctors examining a medical image – and poor display reproduction could lead to each doctor getting an entirely different picture of what they should be seeing on screen.
The second problem concerns quick scene changes – commonplace for video playback and games – which demand a performance that is just too high for some of today’s slow liquid crystals. Slow response times can result in distortion or streaking.
Therefore, tft panel designers are striving to ensure customers see the bigger picture by introducing a host of competitive active matrix technologies, such as twisted nematic, in plane switching (IPS) and multidomain vertical alignment.
