Vancouver Airport to enhance Tarsier system 08/05/2008

debris detection, millimetre radar, runway debris detection Vancouver International Airport is to deploy cameras in order to enhance its Tarsier runway debris detection system. The Tarsier system, developed by Qinetiq, uses millimetre wave radar as its primary sensor to provide round the clock runway debris detection.
In the Vancouver application, four radars scan the airport's north and south parallel runways, locating objects that could be drawn into engines or damage aircraft systems. The camera enhancement will improve airport efficiency by allowing remote visual verification of detected debris. The cameras will be cued automatically, allowing the operations team to get see debris as soon as the system detects it.
“Vancouver is proud to be a leader in this innovative technology that allows us to detect and remove debris quickly and efficiently,” said Brett Patterson, director of operational safety and planning at Vancouver International Airport.
