Although seen by many as the ‘best thing since sliced bread’, demand for products based on the Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) has not grown as rapidly as was originally anticipated.
However, the communications platform now seems to have gained some momentum and market researchers are predicting better times ahead. One recently published report claims sales of ATCA products will reach $5billion a year by 2012.
ATCA was defined by the PCI Industrial Computers Manufacturers Group (PICMG) as an open standard to enable telecommunication grade products to be developed using products from multiple vendors. This open standards approach removes some of the risk involved in developing proprietary systems for the aggressive comms market.
It was always thought that ATCA products would find the majority of applications in the communications sector – and, more specifically, in telecommunications. But a later move has seen the development of a ‘cut down’ version of the standard called MicroTCA. Whilst also envisioned as having application in the communications segment, MicroTCA has attracted a lot of interest from developers in the embedded systems sector and looks to have a strong future in this arena.
