Enlightening photonics 08/05/2008

Photonics, Optoelectronics, Semiconductors, General lighting Recent developments in solid state lighting are pulling much of the photonics supply chain into new territories says Alex Clarke, manager of the UK Photonics Cluster (PCUK). As a result, he’s excited by the joint ventures taking place between the semiconductor and general lighting industries – particularly the partnerships being created and the amount of new investment.
“We now have what was previously two completely separate entities transferring collaborative knowledge,” he explained. “We’re also seeing an exchange of value through intellectual property as UK companies continue to promote innovative designs in all kinds of photonic areas of interest which can then be leveraged overseas. Right now, the UK’s key asset is the amount of ingenuity its photonics industry has to offer.”
To help promote and share knowledge in the UK’s photonics (also known as optoelectronics) industry, PCUK is an industry network of companies aimed at providing support for the latest research and development in a growth area of technology that is fast becoming a hotbed for intelligent lighting innovations.
