Firm handshakes 18/04/2008

Internet based communications, IP address, Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS), File transfer (ftp), Simple mail transfer (smtp), Wireless Transport Layer Security protocol (WTLS) Increasingly, product developers are looking to include communications functionality in their latest offerings. This is partly driven by the High Street, where consumers are pushing for convergence – integrating previously standalone functions into a single device. But industrial customers are equally interested in being able to ‘talk’ to machines and the like.
All very well, but overlying this demand is the requirement for security. This is particularly important when the internet is used as the communication medium. With everything from vending machines to the legendary internet fridge being assigned an IP address, the potential for ‘hacking’ into communications increases.
In some instances, security isn’t a great issue. But there are applications where ceding control to a hacker may have major implications. And there is always data security to bear in mind.
Various approaches to internet security are available, but one of the most pervasive – although not immediately obvious – is the Transport Layer Security protocol.
