In the battle to cram more integration into less space, customers are trying to strike a delicate balance between electrical and thermal performance. Tekdata Interconnect Systems sees many developments requiring high power connectors. These range from power management and conversion of renewable energy plant, to increasing numbers of systems in military vehicles which have more electric and electronic monitoring and control systems and the ‘More Electric Aircraft’, in which hydraulic and air bleed systems are increasingly being replaced by electric systems.
“The spaces into which these systems have to be shoehorned are shrinking rapidly,” stated managing director Ernie Edwards. “This often leaves inadequate space for the interconnections. Routings are difficult, backshells need shrinking and power and signal applications have to be routed and connected in the same small space. We provide a variety of solutions, such as designing and making bespoke connectors, backshells and over moulds; taking wires and cables out of connectors at unusual angles, creating special routing/bridging/bend radius pieces; and solutions without backshells. We’re also designing special cables and woven harnesses that enable us to mix power, signal, optic fibre and even hydraulic and pneumatic pipework within the weave or cable in order to reduce space, weight, cost and complexity of assembly and routing.”
