Electronic product design and electronics production are both highly automated processes, but it is in the transfer of products between the two that bottlenecks can occur. The efficient migration of products from design to manufacture is critical as the time to market advantages achieved by the latest automated design tools can easily evaporate if the transfer to production is fumbled. A robust new project introduction (NPI) process is required to ensure that products are introduced into the manufacturing plant as efficiently as possible.
Successful NPI starts with putting the right management structure in place. It is essential that each project has a clearly identifiable manager who takes ownership of issues as they arise as no one individual can be an expert in all of the areas involved. That individual should have strong team leadership skills – accepting inputs from all the different departments and reconciling conflicts to produce the best outcome at a project level. TTems normally assigns a project manager who will bring together a complete project team that includes all the required disciplines. This team meets regularly with a given customer to ensure that a good relationship is created and maintained.
Once the project is initiated, it is essential that its progress is documented, both to ensure the project team is continuously aware of its status, and to ensure the project is kept on track and to budget.
