ST launches new microcontroller platform 25/02/2008

STMicroelectronics has unveiled the STM8 microcontroller platform, which will be made using an ST proprietary 130nm embedded non volatile memory technology.
The platform is said to be the foundation for a number of distinct product families, each optimised for specific applications – including automotive, industrial, low voltage and battery operated applications. Each product family will deliver higher performance, shorter application design cycles and low total system cost.
The STM8 uses a Harvard architecture with 16bit index registers and stack pointer and a 16Mbyte linear address space. The core is said to process an average of 1.6 cycles per instruction, with a peak performance of 20MIPS at 24MHz using a three stage pipeline.
