Using a platform - Sponsored Tutorial 09/11/2007

The digital broadcasting standards operating throughout Europe are almost as diverse as the ways in which consumers access tv services. Combined, these factors prevent equipment providers from anticipating how buying preferences will develop. In some territories, it may make more sense for the set top box (STB) to host the majority of features, with the tv acting as little more than a monitor. In other regions and market sectors, an integrated digital television (IDTV) may be preferred.
To maximise market share, manufacturers need to be able to offer both solutions. But cost and time to market pressures require designs to be completed quickly. The luxury of a protracted development project – or even the time to learn about the diverse range of digital television (DTV) standards in place and emerging in various territories – cannot be entertained.
